Sengoku Jidai is an immensely detailed mod I’ve been working on for the last 2.5 years as a side hobby that began as a Minecraft world for a Japanese house I made, which turned into a Japanese City, which turned into a Resource Pack to match the city. Then I made a datapack to match the resource pack, and now I have this fully fledged mod, which takes the idea of retheming Minecraft to an all-new level. Altering every aspect of the game, including blocks, mobs, items, biomes, and structures, into the world of Japanese history, culture, and mythology. The amount of content added and changes cannot be summed up in a single paragraph, so I will try my best to list every feature I’ve added in this mod.
This is the official mod extension of this project. Link to the datapack this mod was made off of can be found here.

As I said, this began as an Optifine Resource Pack, and I've made the jump to Fabric a year ago, so I need everyone to download to following mods below for 1.21.1

- Sheep were not introduced to Japan until the Meiji Restoration, so I have removed them from all biomes. Obtaining Wool (In this case, Linen) has been reworked to a fibre-growing system.

- Seeds can be found in Ferns.
- Raw Tamahagane and Tamahagane Ingots.

Weapons and Armor.
For each material (Wood, Iron, Tamahagane, Gold, Diamond, and Hi’hirokane)
- Tanto
- A short-range dagger with high attack speed.
- Can be used for stealth kills on unsuspected foes.
- Tetsubo
- A blunt weapon with decent attack speed and range.
- Kanabo
- Similar to the Tetsubo, but with less attack speed and more range and damage.
- Yari
- High attack speed and ranged spear.
- Can only be thrusted.
- Naginata
- Similar to the Yari, but can be swung in a larger hitbox and has lower attack speed.
- Odachi
- A massive sword with high damage and range, but low attack speed.
- Has built-in knockback
- Blade of the Kensei
- Dropped from the Warlord boss.
- Can be upgraded to the Hi’hirokane Tier (Netherite).
- Grants Movement Speed.
All Weapons above, including Katanas (Swords) and Axes, will have blocking mechanics similar to the shield. - I also haven't even bothered to test the mod without the Better Combat Mod, so while it's not required, it is recommended.

- Bandits
- Usually carry wooden weapons or bows.

Samurai/Ashigaru/Sohei are allied within their own clans and will fight others in the opposing clans, including bandits and ronin.

New Combat Features
Stealth System

- Basic stealth is introduced to the game. Enemy mobs that are not facing a player will not be able to detect them unless they make noise or get too close. A "!" indicator will appear above the mob's head when it detects you.
- Attacking an unsuspected will cause a critical strike.
- Doing this with a Tanto will insta-kill most mobs.
- The player can lower their detection range significantly by concealing in foliage.
- Tall Grass reduces the detection range down to 1 block
- Shorter Grass (except for regular grass) reduces the detection rate down to 5 blocks.
- All Smoke Bombs (splash potions) will grant the thrower a brief invisibility buff.
- Armor is no longer left rendered while invisible.
- Mobs now immediately lose track of you once invisible, allowing you to flee or reposition in a hiding spot for a stealth kill.
- I do not plan to make this a standalone mod. So if someone wants to steal this idea, please be my guest.
Parry and Poise System

- Blocking attacks with your weapon with the right click is back and more effective.
- Applies to Katanas, Axes, and all added modded weapons.
- Blocking with your weapon has its own sounds and particles to create satisfaction
- Blocking damage with your weapon applies "poise" damage to the blocker.
- Once your poise is broken, you will not be able to block attacks for a brief period.
- Some weapons deal more poise damage than others.
- You regain poise damage over time.
- Mobs such as Samurai, Ronin, and Goryo use this system as well.

- Onsen
- When near a magma block, surface-level water will begin to emit mist particles
- Being idle in the onsen water will grant a Saturation buff while in the hot springs.
- Should be immune to freezing.
- After rainfall, mist particles will begin to appear upon the surface for a minor duration.
- This can be turned off in the Mod Settings.
- The music system has been reworked, with specific music for different categories to play/fade out for certain situations. Such as day/night music, combat music, underground, etc.

OVERWORLD
The Minecraft Overworld is meant to represent the real world and its environment types. Environments Japan doesn't have lol. And since the whole point of this project is to both expand and reduce Minecraft into Japan, that means no deserts, savannas, red-rock canyons, icebergs, or rich jungles (They have sub-tropical forests at best).
Japan's natural landscape is mostly dominated by temperate forests and mountainous regions. This will make the diversity of biomes and climates smaller but better fit the narrative for this project, which is to trick you into thinking you're in Japan. And I can't pull that off when you spawn right between Canyonlands National Park, Utah, the Amazon Rainforest, and the Arabian Desert.
However I'm not just deleting biomes and calling it a day (Except for the Frozen Ocean, the icebergs are hardcoded in). I have overhauled these biomes into something completely new; for example, the Badlands has been reworked into the Sanguine Forest. The orange, red-rock, and sand have been substituted for regular stone and grass, but have transformed into an autumnal temperate forest with rich warm colors. I've also divided the biomes by seasonal characteristics, allowing the transition between biomes to feel more natural and less jarring.

The Nether
Yomi
"When the creator goddess Izanami gave birth to Kagutsuchi, the kami of fire. Her husband, Izanagi, fueled by grief, marched down to retrieve her in Yomi, the land of the dead. The place where all who die make home."
Yomi, also known as the Land of the Dead, is the replacement for the Nether dimension. While being virtually identical to the Vanilla Nether, the flaming hot visuals have been replaced with a cold blueish-green to personify the world of darkness much more effectively. This realm is home to many yokai, such as the Shikome, Gaki, Goryo, Maikubi, Keneō, Okubi, Yurei, Datsue-ba, Wa nyūdō, and Katawaguruma. Homes can be found along the Sanzu River, containing lost souls known as Shiryō, who will trade and sell valuable Yomi artifacts.
NOTE FOR SHADER USERS: You may have to configure your shaders if you want to gain this misty blue color palette.

Ryugu-jo
"Ryūgū is a fantastical palace that appears in many legends and folktales. It is the primary residence of the dragon god of the sea and his daughter Otohime, and is home to the ocean’s royal court. The palace is populated by aquatic creatures who wear human clothing and have a society which mirrors that of the human world." -Yokai.com
Ryūgū-jō is the alternate of the End dimension of this data and resource pack. Replacing the Ender Dragon with the great Sea Dragon known as Ryūjin. One of the more notable changes is that the previous void of the End has been flooded with a vast ocean filled with coral and other ocean life.
NOTE FOR SHADER USERS: I don't recommend shaders for this dimension. A lot of shader packs cater to the vanilla end and often block out the cool skybox.

OVERALL VANILLA CHANGES (IMPORTANT)
Stone Tools/Iron Tools Changes
When you get into a world, make a wooden pickaxe, mine three stones for the stone pickaxe. you're going to be really disappointed to see that nothing with come up in the craft output. That's because I've completely reworked the progression system with stone and iron tools. The vanilla 'stone' tools are now the new iron tools; the item ID will say stone_pickaxe, but it's named Iron Pickaxe. And the vanilla iron_pickaxe is now the Tamahagane Pickaxe. So the new progression order is Wood > Iron > Tamahagane > So on.

Upgrading to Tamahagane will be similar to upgrading Diamond tools to Netherite, in which you'll need a smithing template and an ingot at a smithing table to upgrade your iron tool to Tamahagane. The smithing template is very easy to craft with iron ore and cobblestone. To make a tamahagane ingot, you must gather iron sand from riverbeds with an Iron Shovel and smelt it into Raw Tamahagane. Which can be crafted into the ingot using regular Iron Ingots.

I can see this being very controversial, so I made numerous compensations to sweeten the deal:
- You can mine Iron Ore with a Wooden Pickaxe now.
- You get more Raw Iron from Iron Ore
- Tamahagane Tools (vanilla iron tools) are much more durable.
I just felt like the progression system was incredibly flawed, and the use of Wooden tools, save for the pickaxe (for a brief moment), was worthless.
Sheep/Wool
As I said before, I removed sheep from all biomes due to my obsession with making this as accurate as possible. However, sheep are essential for wool and your first bed to sleep through the night, so I made some compensations.
- String (crafted into wool) can now be obtained through agriculture by growing Ramie Fibre.
- Ramie Seeds are obtained from ferns.
- I understand people want to get a bed ASAP on the first night and not wait for a stupid crop to grow, so I made the Grass Bed, which can be crafted from Reeds (Hay Bales), which can be crafted from numerous foliage.
- As for Mutton, I replaced the item textures and name with Squid Meat, which can drop from yours truly.
- Increased Max item stack size from 64 to 99
- Bottles, Bowl Items, and Potions are now stackable to 16.
- The bundle crafting recipe is available despite this being 1.21.1
- Restored Particles from explosions
- Fence gate and Trapdoor recipes now output more in quantity.
- Numerous villages will have a Mending Librarian ready for you, built in. No interrogations needed.
None of these has anything to do with Japan or the purpose of this project. I just think these QOL changes were needed, plus the current inventory system is terrible.
- Pork is now distributed as a basic animal meat that can be dropped by other animals.
- Rabbit Hide is now distributed as Animal Hide that can be dropped by other animals.
- Tanegashima (The Crossbow) can only fire Musket Balls (Spectral Arrows)
- Smoke particles and brief light are emitted when fired.
- Bullets fired from the Tamegashima have a much more intense velocity.
- Gunshots can be heard from far away.
- Tree Sap (Honeycomb) can drop from decaying leaves and can be used for numerous things.
- Can craft into Urushi (Slime Ball).
- Offers an alternative torch recipe.
- Can be composted.
- Block of Reeds (Hay Bale) is no longer just a block of wheat but meant for early game roofing material, which can be crafted from all sorts of foliage/grass hogging up your inventory.
- Several recipes were changed. All will be available in the in-game Recipe Book.
- Gunpowder now has a recipe due to the low spawn rates of Kodama Nezumi (Creepers).


Please refrain from asking the following questions:
- "Can you make this available to X version?"
- With the amount of updates Mojang rolls out and the workload it took to make this as a one-man dev, it is unlikely I will be expanding versions.
- "Can you port this to Bedrock?"
- No.
- "Can you make this compatible with X mod and/or with Neo Forge?"
- If its compatible it's compatible, I know there's a mod that lets you port Fabric mods to NeoForge, but if it doesn't work, then it doesn't work. I have no intention of testing some random mod with this one.
- "Can you add this next?"
- No
- "Pls pls make this part a standalone mod!"
- If I could do it, then someone else probably has.
These questions and pretty much any that riddle down to telling me to "do more". I think I did more than enough in terms of the content I've added for a free mod. Reminder, I'm doing this for me; this is a hobby. I'm also the only guy working on this.
I will gladly accept feedback and critiques for bugs or features that are in the mod/game. Got a comment about the QoL changes? The Iron/Tamahagane Changes? Performance issues? Let me know, but for the love of god, if you read this and try to sweet-talk me into a compliment paragraph that leads to a "pls bedrock" at the end, then don't bother. I find that very irritating and unhelpful.
